More than any other painter, Eustace Paul Ziegler (1881-1969) captured the spirit of the early 20th century Alaskan frontier. Arriving in the mining boomtown of Cordova in 1909 to operate an Episcopal mission, Ziegler quickly became known for his paintings of the people of that spectacular land: Native Alaskans, priests, miners, trappers, fishermen. For the next 15 years he was based in Cordova but traveled by pack train, dogsled, snowshoe, and boat in all seasons to the mining communities of the Copper River country. He served the people of his far-flung diocese while accumulating many of the experiences, stories, and visual images which he would draw upon in his paintings for decades after. In 1924 he left the ministry and moved permanently to Seattle to pursue art. Although he was an influential Northwest artist, he returned to Alaska nearly every summer to paint, and throughout his career the majority of his work, including that from his Seattle studio, depicted life on the northern frontier. In thin major new volume featuring work from throughout Ziegler's career, art historian and artist Kesler E. Woodward explores the life and career of a significant painter of Alaska and the Northwest. |
